Amid all the different dieting plans, the latest trends, the pills, and celebrities recommending exotic berries or (gasp) human growth hormone (Suzanne Somers), it’s hard to find the right approach for the rest of us. Well, a new study released by the New England Journal of Medicine has gotten us closer to an answer, and it’s not as easy as taking a pill or settling for a particular diet program. It’s so simple, so direct, but so hard sometimes…
Well, what is it??!!! Drum roll please…
It’s simply cutting calories. In a two-year study of over 800 overweight adults, researchers concluded that it didn’t matter what type of diet participants were on (low-fat, low-carb/high-protein or high-carb/low-protein). What mattered was the total amount of calories consumed. In other words, it makes little difference over the long term where the majority of calories come from, as long as the total amount of calories is cut back.
So what does this mean for us? It means that as long as we’re cutting calories, we can go on any weight loss program we want to. It means we can find what works for us as individuals, and if you feel like Mediterranean one day, and Chinese the next, managing portions is what works best.
