red-barn.jpg What is a good milk substitute if you are lactose intolerant? To answer your question Carol, here are three suggestions:

  • Soy milk, source of protein and fortified with Omega, Calcium, and Vitamin D
  • Lactaid®, lactose free dairy product, rich in protein, calcium, Vitamin A, D.
  • Almond milk is also an excellent substitute for milk. It is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals and of course lactose and cholesterol free.

More on dairy products and lactose intolerance:

If you are lactose intolerant here is a great site to learn more about it: “Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest significant amounts of lactose, which is the predominant sugar of milk”…

The ‘Got No Milk” Recipe site, is helpful when you want to cook without real milk or other dairy products. Pick up a healthy and delicious salmon recipe.

Calcium without the cow links to an article by Charles R. Attwood, M.D., F.A.A.P. He observes that the protein in animal products such as milk, causes the body to shed calcium through the urinary tract, thus greater amounts of the mineral are needed in order to maintain healthy bone density. He also notes that leafy vegetables are naturally high in calcium and are absorbed by the body just as well as calcium from a milk source.
