I think that there are really 2 main advantages of free weights over machines;

1. You can keep some free weights under your bed for easy access, no gym required.
2. They allow you to work all muscles in all directions rather than restricting movement.

I got into free weights when I finally decided to venture in my husbands garage gym (many years ago) after watching a fitness DVD that focussed on weight lifting. It really changed the way I thought about weight training.

I don't have to money or the space for machines & enjoy my strength training routine with friends using dumbbells. I enjoy the pretty colors, the satisfaction that I'm actually getting down to keeping fit, noticing how easy it is to do things that used to be harder, I love that energized blissful feeling that comes out of nowhere after training & I especially love that my dumbbells didn't cost me a lot :)
Thanks for your comparison.

Personally I prefer free weights over machines. I've been into strength training now for a long time and since I cut out machines and started using free weights all the time, my strength gains have skyrocketed.

Great article. I think you went into great detail about the benefits and disadvantages of using free weights compared to weight lifting machines. I personally stick to machines for my weight training. I use dumbbells only for one exercise - to train the abs by holding the weight in one hand along the hip while leaning the body into the opposite direction.
