Fat Camps or Fitness Camps?

fotolia_eric_gevaert_0.jpg

People ask me, what are weight loss camps? First of all, weight loss camps are not fat camps, although they are often described that way. Instead, they should be called fitness camps, because their aim is not just weight loss, but also the development of healthy habits to maintain that weight loss. They are comprehensive programs whose approach involves two major elements: a controlled environment, and learning by doing. To be effective, a weight loss camp will be geared toward a complete lifestyle make-over that ultimately leads to a happier and healthier life after camp.

So what qualities should one look for in a weight loss camp? Read more

Diet Plan Review: A Sprinkle of Sensa?

Easy Plan for Weight Loss: Try Tastants as a Diet Supplement?

There are so many diet plans out there, outlining which foods to eat, which to avoid, which supplements to take and what kind of exercises to do. This plan is much different, and sounds almost too easy to be true: Sensa Sprinkles. All it involves is buying this brand of flavor enhancer and dusting it over every meal you eat, and then you can eat everything you normally choose. The sprinkles are supposed to not only enhance the flavor of your food, but also stimulate your sense of smell and thus improve feelings of satiety, so you eat less. Sounds great, but does it actually work? Read more

Healthy Weight Loss Tips: How to Stop Overeating.

American adults, on average, consume 500 more calories daily than we did 30 years ago, and our children consume an average of 350 more calories. In fact, if the rate of obesity continues climbing unchecked, over 86% of adults will be overweight or obese by the year 2030.

Where are those extra calories coming from and how can we stop overeating?

An article in the online science news magazine, ScienceDaily featured the thoughts and research of behavioral scientist Brian Wansink, Ph.D.:

“We’re a nation of mindless eaters. We do so many things during the day that when it comes to food we can just nibble and nibble and nibble, and eat and eat and eat.”

According to Dr. Wansink, we often don’t notice our overeating, and the reason is more psychological than physical. Basically, it’s all in our heads… Read more

Finding The Best Diet Book: When Calories Count

poignée de porte métal

As we posted a few days ago, the latest research for weight loss shows that total calories is what ultimately counts when it comes to weight loss, not the proportions of fat, protein or carbs. So when shopping for a new diet book, be sure to keep this in mind.

There are so many diet books out there, how do we choose?

What works and what doesn’t depends just as much on the reader as it does on the author. Aside from the two biggies, diet and exercise, the rest is about preference, individual needs and motivation. While high-impact aerobics and Mediterranean cuisine might be all right for some, interval training and old-fashioned comfort foods are preferred by others – it’s increased activity and decreased calories that works for everybody.

See our post on 11 easy ways to cut calories.

Here are a few diet books currently on the market today that promote healthy lifestyle strategies, rather than food fads:

The No S Diet: The Strikingly Simple Weight-Loss Strategy That Has Dieters Raving–and Dropping Pounds by Reinhard Engels (Paperback – March 4, 2008)

No Sweets No Snacks No Seconds except on Saturdays, Sundays and Special occasions.
This book is about cutting calories by changing eating habits, rather than focusing on food types and counting carbs. While habits may seem hard to change at first, it is change that can be not only effective but lasting. This simple strategy also avoids calorie counting or radically altering what you normally cook at home.

Slim Fast Diet: Nagging Questions

Can you lose belly fat with the Slim Fast Diet?

Chances are you already know where to find Slim Fast products. But just in case you don’t, Slim Fast shakes, soups, and snack bars are readily available in the weight loss diet aisle of your supermarket. And, believe it or not, the powdered kind (added to skim milk) has been around for over a generation now. How often have you passed them by and thought – As I have writing this blog – “Should I try this program? Can these shakes actually help me lose belly fat?”

Or have you already tried the product only to find the Slim Fast Diet nearly impossible to stick with?

For all of you curious dieters out there, the question remains WHY or WHY NOT?

Well, one consideration is that we enjoy food using all of our senses – taste – smell – touch – sight – and sound. How difficult is it then, to satisfy appetite with just a shake for breakfast, lunch or dinner?

The Slim Fast diet plan requires you to substitute two meals out of three. Number three can be of your choosing (thank goodness) as long as it’s a sensible dinner, lunch or breakfast not exceeding 600 calories. You also have the option of choosing a Slim Fast product in addition to the shake, such as a soup or snack bar, up to three times daily. Note the Slim Fast diet plan also requires you to drink a lot of water, 8 glasses a day, to be exact.

Can I lose weight with the product?

To answer this nagging question: Yes, you probably can.

People have lost a lot of weight adhering to the Slim Fast diet plan when combined with regular exercise. But – yes – there is a big but in it… Many people who have lost weight and body fat report gaining it back, all of it, and more sometimes. Why? Because Slim Fast isn’t a healthy well rounded diet plan by itself.

On the other hand, Slim Fast products can Aid You in Living a Healthy Lifestyle.

That is, when you balance all food groups in six small nutritional meals throughout the day. In this scenario, Slim Fast products make great nutritional snacks between meals. They are low calorie, do provide some nutrients, and can help support your efforts for healthy weight loss. So go ahead and grab a chocolate or strawberry flavored Slim Fast Shake, instead of the candy bar in the next aisle down…

Bill Phillips Body for Life Weight Loss Plan

I’ve been looking at the Body for Life Plan by Bill Phillips and must admit that I don’t really like the idea of it. As in most other healthy weight loss regimens, the Body for Life diet plan combines specialized food and exercise. Unfortunately, this diet plan was created for people already in some physical shape and already exercising every day. For those not in shape, the level of cardio training could easily become physical torture. I believe exercising needs to be built upon gradually and in ways that encourage us to move on to the next level for a stronger and healthier body.

The diet menu plan also seems challenging, unless you are already in the groove for a monotonous meal every day, seven days a week, and are an avid meat eater for that matter. Not every one is. The hormones found in many meat products – and images of tortured cattle – made me lose my appetite for such specific high protein weight loss diet plans, although I am by no means vegetarian.

Personally, I believe that there are better weight loss plans for the dieter to choose from, but this is a weight loss diet site. So the following is an outline of the Bill Phillip’s Body for Life Weight Loss Plan. Who knows, it might work for some of us. If you’ve ever tried it, please leave a comment and share your experience with everyone.

How the Bill Phillips Body for Life Plan works: Read more
