Woman Holding Dietary Supplements

There are many types of protein supplements on the market today, among them is whey protein the most popular. Trying to choose the right one just for you can get confusing, that’s why we’ve created a list of protein supplements, explaining its origin, ingredients and function on the body.

Whey Protein:

  • Inexpensive and abundant. Derived from milk, whey protein is a byproduct of making products such as cheese, or casein. There are some supplements available that are made straight from milk (not as byproducts of manufacture)- but not all, so read labels. Whey protein is extraordinarily popular now, and can even be found in large stores, like Wal-Mart or Target – or online.
  • Short Duration/Fast-acting. Whey protein is easily digested by the body and is broken down in about an hour. This makes it particularly good for muscle repair/building immediately after a workout.
  • Mixes easier in liquid than other milk-based proteins, such as casein, so it often tastes better.
  • Contains all essential amino acids (complete protein).

 * Individuals allergic to milk or dairy products must avoid whey protein.

Choosing the Best Protein Supplement for Weight Loss

shoulder presses

Searching for the best protein supplement for your diet is daunting. There are so many ads displaying people that aren’t just trim but could also qualify for an Olympic-scale triathlon. They use heavy, scientific-sounding lingo and declare that the latest-breaking research proves their product is superior to all others. How do you sift through all the bantering and braying, and find what’s best for you?

First off, many protein supplements are created for body-builders and athletes who train intensively. They might say things like “fat burner,” or “muscle builder,” on the labels, but this is misleading for the average dieter, because they can be loaded with calories and additives. Read more

High Protein Diet For Weight Loss: Separating Myth from Reality

fotalia-copyright08-20.jpg

High protein dieting is all the rage and we all know at least somebody who’s tried it. But are all the claims out there, mostly made by advertisers, true? Of course not!

MYTH: Eating More Protein Builds More Muscle.

REALITY: No it doesn’t. Period. Protein provides the basic building blocks of muscle, but in no way causes muscle growth.  It is exercise that spurs the growth of muscle, not increased protein intake. If your body’s not being prompted to add more muscle, it will simply turns the macro-nutrient into fat.

We like: not just another diyhealth weight loss blog

MYTH: Protein Helps You Feel Fuller, Longer.

REALITY: Mostly true. Protein does increase satiety and can stave off hunger effectively. The decreased appetite may help you consume up to 200 calories less a day on average. However, protein is not the only appetite buster. Fiber also increases the sense of fullness after a meal and must be considered, not just for overall health, but also because it contains minimal calories- your body doesn’t digest it. Protein, of course, does have calories. Read more

Body building: Protein Drink Recipes

During strength training, especially body building, your muscles’ energy and strength is pushed to the limits of endurance. After such hard work, the body needs rest. This recovery period allows the muscles to refuel, rebuild, and add mass.

Protein drinks play a vital role in this rest period, as they supply the essential amino acids for peak muscle performance and growth.

If you want to personalize your protein drink or if you want to have better control over what’s in the protein drinks you take, you can make your own blend. Thus you can ensure that you meet your body’s needs for a specific bodybuilding training set, or simply make protein supplements more palatable. There are many flavors that you can blend and mix. Aside from protein, powder mixes usually contain carbohydrates, calcium, riboflavin, and other nutrients.

Below are examples for personalizing your protein drinks:

Milk and Honey

2 tbsp unflavored protein powder
2 tbsp honey
1 ½ cups milk

Mix unflavored protein powder and honey into 1½ cups milk, blend well. Then sprinkle it with nutmeg or cinnamon.

Banana Smoothie

1 cup milk
1 large frozen banana
2 tbsp vanilla flavored protein powder
1 tbsp honey

Simply mix all the ingredients together in a blender and transfer contents into glass.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake

1 cup milk
1 scoop chocolate ice cream
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1 egg

Put all the ingredients together in a blender and serve when smooth and creamy.
