Calcium rich foods (and SAT fat?) help shed pounds.
A fresh new year is on its way as well as another weight loss diet book aiming for the best seller list. And each year, the success of its diet depends on a plausible plan people can actually follow and live by while shedding a pound or more each week. The South Beach Diet was a hit. After following more rigid plans, such as Atkins, we were to eat carbohydrates again. Now, oh heavenly bliss, Michael Aziz, M.D., reveals a meal plan in his new book, “The Perfect 10 Diet guaranteed to help you shed up to three dress sizes – and glowing, younger looking skin”, we’re allowed to eat fat. Not just any fat, SAT Fat!
Saturated fats, aren’t they the culprit to heart disease?
We learn in Dr. Aziz Book of a study done by Women’s Heath Initiative, a 15 year study of nearly 162,000 healthy postmenopausal women.
While SAT fats are associated with a lipid profile (a measure that includes the ration of HDL, or good cholesterol to LDL, or bad, cholesterol) in which LDL is high, more in depth study of the types of LDL, reveals an important distinction of which many doctors are still unaware, say Michael Aziz, M.D. One type of LDL is fluffy and too big to go below the arterial walls to cause clogs, the second, small LDL (sLDL), is dense and small and can squeeze under the arterial walls to clog arteries. Turns out, saturated fats only raise levels of large fluffy LDL, with no damage to the arteries and heart.
How saturated fats speed weight loss…
Cutting saturated fats out of our diet inhibits the formation of hormones such as progesterone, estrogen, testosterone and the adrenal hormone DHEA all vitally important for the body’s metabolism and fat burning ability.
How much weight can you lose on Dr. Aziz Diet?
Saturated fats also help prevent sugar from entering the blood stream to quickly helping the body avoid the insulin spikes that can prompt cravings and signal the liver to convert sugars into belly fat,” Dr. Aziz adds. Keeping the fat in foods not only enhances its taste but it helps keep us satisfied longer. This is why women on my plan lost up to 8 pounds in a week,” says Dr. Aziz. And weight loss isn’t the only benefit. Lower cholesterol, better memory, reduced depression and anxiety, improved libido and younger looking skin were noted.
My verdict: The Perfect 10 Diet is well worth trying. I like it because it allows foods such as whole milk, butter, coconut oil and dark chocolate. Other healthy fat sources include avocado, extra virgin olive oil, almonds and almond butter. Dark leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, berries and citrus are part of its healthy meal planning. Finally, a dieter doesn’t have to cook separate meals apart from the family. What it actually all boils down to is eating mindful. Eating an entire chocolate bar (even if it is dark chocolate) will throw off any healthy weight loss diet plan.
Note: I’ve gotten used to drinking low fat milk and like it now. It does save me 90 calories daily without scarifying the calcium plus vitamin D needed for healthy bone. Yet, I treat myself with a dark slice of the freshest pumpernickel bread, buttered, and topped with jam preserves. Delicious!
Lose up to 8 pounds on the Dr. Aziz plan:
Breakfast blender recipe – Coconut Shake: Combine one large very ripe banana, 1 cup coconut milk, 1/4 cup blanched almond slivers and some crushed ice; blend well until smooth.
Healthy Snack- Garlic Hummus Dipper: In food processor, combine 1 can of chickpeas, fresh garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and cayenne pepper to taste; blend thoroughly. Serve with pita crisps.
Lunch – Tuna and Artichoke Pasta: Combine 1 can of albacore tuna, quartered artichoke hearts, 3 Tbs. olive oil and a splash of lemon juice. Toss with 1 cup cooked whole wheat pasta. Season with herbs.
Snack – A wedge of Camembert cheese and whole grain crackers with raw cashews and an apple, or other combination of favorite fresh fruit and nuts.
Dinner – Thai Style chicken Salad: Combine chopped cooked chicken, diced avocado, salad green, cilantro chopped, crushed peanuts, minced scallions, red pepper flakes, low sodium teriyaki sauce and lime juice.
Again, I recommend creating your own plan based on Dr. Aziz. Use the foods you like, experiment with different never before tried fruit and vegetables and try out new recipes. Plus, add calcium rich foods to your diet…

Sounds interesting. I have been doing Atkins for some time and have had great success, so I think I will stick with it, but it’s always good to have options in the diet world.

Low-carb diets promote cancer and mess up hormones. I just finished reading ” The Perfect 10 Diet,” and got off Atkins immediately. An excellent read, I am starting on this diet.
