Low Carb Foods: Searching for Good Carbs? Start Here :)

child bakingLow carb foods” is such a huge buzzword in the dieting world that even those of us not looking to lose weight have surely started paying more attention to our pasta, breads, rice and baked goodies. After all, it is true that more refined carbs generally possess more calories and fewer nutrients than whole, less processed grains.

Assuming that we all know the basics, it can still be a challenge taking a low carb route especially when the goal is weight loss.

So here’s a few helpful links and tips for low carb dieting, other than the usual :)

Instead of chips, try nuts–just make sure they’re the right ones. Nuts are naturally rich in protein, healthy oils and fiber, all of which helps satisfy hunger and curb cravings. Here’s a post comparing the nutrient, protein, and calorie content of various nuts.

Fresh grapefruit is considered one of the best diet foods. One medium-sized half has merely 40 calories with only 10g of total carbs. Combined with hunger-curbing fiber and 70% of your daily value for vitamin C, grapefruit is a great addition to a low carb diet. Consider No-Carb Pasta.

Or…

Splurge! Just make sure every bit of these carb-calories count. Obviously whole wheat pasta is good start, but not all brands are created equal. For extra help, consider NuVal scores.

Noodles and Pasta: NuVal Scores

The NuVal score rates a food’s nutrient density, or its concentration of nutrients compared to the amount of calories. The greater the nutrients and the lower the calories, the higher the NuVal score. Glycemic load, the presence of “good” or “bad” fats (including trans fat), and fiber content are also factored into scores. Ratings range from 0 – 100, with zero being poorest in nutritional value and 100 being best in nutritional value per calories.

I lost 135 pounds in 7 months!
I don’t weigh myself and I don’t measure. I don’t want to be too obsessed with it, and I don’t have the tools at home. But today, when I put on that one pair of black pants, I had my result. People I know and work with have noticed the change in me. I really do have more energy without carrying a belly around. I know that there is more work for me to do, but it becomes easier every day to make good choices.
