Can Liver Cleanse Melt Away Pounds?

When thinking of weight loss a liver cleanse plan probably doesn’t come to mind as easily as diet or exercise. Yet, it should. Our liver is the largest glandular organ in the body and may very well hold the key to losing body fat fast.

First let’s get a brief idea of how the liver functions. Before nutrients (and contaminants) from digested food enter circulation throughout the rest of the body, they must first enter the liver via the portal vein. In the liver, the portal vein eventually branches out into smaller and smaller vessel that eventually end up branching into tiny capillaries leading into lobules.

The lobules are lined with hepatic cells (liver cells) and are considered metabolic, since they assimilate carbohydrates, fats and proteins… To help understand how nutrient rich food interacts with the liver to help you lose weight faster, here is a short overview of the tasks that are performed by these cells:

  • Convert glucose into glycogen for storage
  • Reconvert glycogen into glucose for energy on demand
  • Regulate blood glucose
  • Turn digested fats to fatty acids
  • Fatty acids synthesize cholesterol
  • Convert excess carbohydrates into fat
  • Convert excess proteins into fat
  • Turn digested proteins in to amino acids
  • Convert amino acids partly to glycogen
  • Produces urea when protein breaks down
  • Urea removes toxic ammonia from body fluids
  • Synthesizes nonessential amino acids from amino acids
  • Filters toxic substances from blood (phagocytic cells)
  • Manufactures plasma proteins
  • Manufactures blood clotting substances
  • Manufactures and secretes bile
  • Stores vitamins, including A, D, K, and B12

A Liver Detox Recipe and Plan

FIRST magazine, Jan.14, 2008.:

The first day (out of the three day diet plan) consists of drinking juices to detox the liver, hence your body. This special detox diet claims that people have lost up to nine pounds of body fat. Well, I don’t believe that. Yet, I like the recipes. Compared to Dr. Rau’s detox diet soup, I prefer to fast on fruit juices. I am also planning to share more details about other detox diets floating about, so be sure to check my newer posts.

Have you ever tried the diet detox recipes described here, or have any other you would like to comment on? Please use the form below to share with us…

First Day:

  • 8 oz all natural cranberry juice
  • 56 oz pure water
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ginger and nutmeg
  • ¾ cup fresh orange juice
  • ¼ cup fresh lemmon juice
  • SteviaPlus natural sweetener
  • Ground flax seed (store in freezer)

Bring the mixture of water and cranberry juice to a soft boil. Combine cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg into a tea ball and steep it in the mixture for 15 minutes. Let it cool, then add orange and lemon juice to the mix. Add SteviaPlus for taste.

Day One of The Liver Cleanse Plan

  • For breakfast pour a glas of the juice. Stir in 2 Tbs. of flax seed
  • One hour later drink 8 oz. water
  • Keep alternating juice and water for the next 12 hours without the flax seed
  • Add the flax seed again to your final cup of juice before bed time

The thing is that there would be less of a need to cleanse the liver if what we put into our mouths in the first place was decent, natural food.

Too much of what we ingest is simply man-made junk.

Christina January 21, 2008 at 7:09 am

My sister’s boyfriend tried this and lost 9 lbs. So I am trying this detox in the next few days and will let you know how it goes.

Dee Wilson January 21, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Nick, I agree. Hormones in meats, pesticides to protect the crops, yet harm us, bleached wheat – are just a few assaults our body has to deal with every day. Perhaps, after all, we should enter the grocery isle with a purpose in mind.

Believe it or not – I didn’t at first. A few girls on the job did this diet and lost 4, 6 and nine pounds respectively. I decided to try it and I lost 8 pounds!
So it doesn’t matterif you believe it or not, just try it – it will not hurt you.

“This special detox diet claims that people have lost up to nine pounds of body fat with this three day diet plan.”

Another great alternative to flush away toxins that may bring about extensive damage to our body if neglected.

I want to do a liver cleanse but Im currently doing a fitness boot camp and the trainer wants us to eat 4-6 times a day small meals, should I wait and do the liver cleanse when Im done with boot camp?

Dee Wilson February 14, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Hi Sandra,
I would recommend to describe the liver cleanse plan to your fitness boot camp trainer and honor his/her suggestion. Best wishes… and let us know what your trainer says… Dee

This is one I haven’t heard of. Sounds easy enough. Thanks.

Brennan Kingsland February 20, 2008 at 3:45 am

The thing that is so important here is not the weight loss, O.K. that’s important, but what is really important is what you are doing for your body overall. With the liver cleansed and the body detoxified you’ll FEEL better. Ain’t that great – slimmer and more energy.
Just gotta mention, Mila, that while I know your formula will work, I simply can’t get olive oil to go down my throat, even though I know it’s good for me. But the first recipe actually looks like it would taste good. If it tastes good and it works, that’s the plan for me.

Evelyn Lim February 20, 2008 at 9:14 am

Hi, I’ve tried the same recipe as the one that Mila has written. I know that the olive oil and the epsom salts and all can taste rather yuckky… I just sucked in my breath and swallow the whole concoction.

The important thing is to give yourself time to rest. Nothing heavy while cleansing!

Cheers, Evelyn

mila February 21, 2008 at 12:48 am

Hi Brennan,
the truth is the grapefruit with epson salt taste bitter but the grapefruit with olive oil actualy taste good and sweet i am telling you this so you know what to expect and i suggest do the cleansing during your day off because youll gonna end up using the bathroom very often epson salt is actually a laxative, and no foods allowed if you want to see the results right away you can have your foods after the cleansing it wont take long not even 3 days just few hours you just have to bear it .

mj February 21, 2008 at 12:50 pm

sorry i forgot to mention that after you drink your mixture of olive oil and grapefruit you have to lay down on your right side with your knees bent so the olive oil will concentrate on removing and cleaning what ever impurities you have in your kidney. thanks hope this help you.

Angie February 25, 2008 at 7:38 pm

This was great for me! It wasn’t hard, I’m not able to eat as much organic as I wish so this is a good cleanse to do every few months. I wasn’t doing it for weight loss but I was happy to see 5lbs gone.

GJ March 3, 2008 at 11:13 pm

So these are to be done fo liver, gall blader, like a fast with no food, right?

What if your systemhad cleared Hep C yrs ago, but may be compreimsed, will these jucie cleanses harm the liver while it is cleaning it out??? Thanks so much.

Great information! Thanks for writing this. It is an honor to participate in the discussion.

RB November 16, 2008 at 11:05 pm

I did it for a day and a half because I recognize I’m a weak person for diets.
The first day I went to the gym in the morning, 2hrs. workout. I started on Friday, and I failed the next day at lunch, (everybody noticed my skin was clear). I went to the gym but no diet at all the rest of the day and Sunday. On monday I could’t believe I was 6 lbs. lighter. I thought it was one of those diets where you loose only water and as soon as you eat normally you gain back the weight.
I didn’t gain back those pounds since then. I go to the gym almost everyday but I eat everything I want.

Hi,
Has anyone tried this detox recently? I see the older posts and am wondering if there have been any recent successes with weight loss.

Whit March 3, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Is it a bad idea to just drink the liquiod for the 3 days instead of adding the meal plan? I want to lose weight fast.
