Liver Cleanse: A 3 Day Diet

Hailed in the magazine FIRST, Jan. 14, 2008 as the Miracle Detox, this 3 day fat burning plan is also called a liver cleanse diet. In contrast to other methods, the 3 Day Liver Cleansing Diet uses fruit juice. This is great news for all us sugar-craving sweet-toothes out there.

The Liver Cleanse Diet utilizes special nutrients to support liver cell function and aid in its ability to burn fat. For example, some of the nutrients for liver detox are organic acids present in cranberry juice. Others facilitate metabolism and glucose conversion and are found in oranges and lemons rich in ascorbic acid (known as vitamin C) and other antioxidants.

Important Elements of a 3 Day Liver Detox:

Antioxidants not only protect liver cells from damage but also enhance bile production to better emulsify (mix) fats for absorption.

Spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger break down fat, reduce appetite and help cleanse the liver from environmental pollutants.

Friendly bacteria in yogurt help further break down toxins in the liver for better absorption of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and proteins.

Just by looking at the following recipes, I think most of us could sustain on this diet for three days and probably feel much healthier for it.

Will this liver cleanse diet help me lose 10 pounds in less than a week?

Well, the best way to find out of course it to try it! A liver detox will give your body a fresh start and initiate fat burning. These three days of juicing and portion control can help jump start weight loss, especially when you do this before starting a new healthy diet plan.

I plan on following the detox diet, but am
unsure how to make a tea ball out of the cinn.
nutmeg, and ginger. Could you help me please?

Hi Carol,

you can purchase a tea ball, which is a punctured metal egg shaped container and used to brew tea leaves in, and fill it with the cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. Or simply take filter paper (coffee filter) and bundle it around the spices, tie it up and steep in the cranberry water mixture. Best wishes… and yes, keep us informed on your progress :) Dee

Hi Dee,

I also seen this liver cleanse article, wrote it down but hadn’t done it, until today. Funny though I had missed some instruction on my little sheet and went on the web here to look up the cleanse and came across your site. Thanks so much for sharing the 3 day cleanse..Took my weight and I will share with you my progress. Oops gotta go time for my water!!

KATHY February 7, 2008 at 1:19 am

I tried the 3-day liver cleanse and it is very livable – I was not hungry at all, and had plenty of energy. I tried to follow the plan exactly and at 4:00 on the third day, I realized that I had forgotten to eat the 6 oz. of lean meat for lunch that day…..so on day three I only had one serving of lean meat.

When I weighed in at Weight Watchers, I had lost 2.8 lbs. I was thrilled and I will do it again in about 4 weeks.

Good luck Angie, and much success. Thank you for sharing :)

Dee Wilson February 7, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Kathy, I love the idea of combining a regular diet plan like Weight Watchers with the three day liver cleanse. If possible, keep us posted at dietivity.com on your milestones and your experience, good and bad.:)

Hello everyone. Today has been day 1 of the 3-Day cleanse and I feel great. I actually can’t wait to see if I will lose any weight. I say this because the juice concoction seems to be a bit tasty. I always feel that if something tastes good that it is restricted from a diet. I know that all you Weight Watcher participants are calling me crazy. I’m just kidding. Today has been pretty easy so I can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds. Let me know how you all are doing! :)

Suzie Cheel February 20, 2008 at 2:55 am

What a wonderfully simple plan- will do this the next time I need a cleanse. added it to delicious as well as stumbling

Suggestion please if one doesn’t eat eggs

Dee Wilson February 20, 2008 at 3:52 am

Thank you, Suzie. For people who don’t eat eggs, I recommend an egg substitute such as “Egg Beaters”. Consisting mostly of egg white, nutrients omitted with the egg yolk are added back to Egg Beaters. The good news, Egg Beaters contains no fat or cholesterol but the same amount of protein as found in whole eggs.

VONNIE February 24, 2008 at 11:43 pm

I don’t like beets or artichokes any other food substitutes or can I simply skip them on my salad?

gloria March 2, 2008 at 10:24 pm

please let me know how many hors between mals and snacks thank you gloria

Dee Wilson March 3, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Hi Gloria,I say it depends on your daily routine. Breakfast after you get up – snack 1-2 hours before lunch… snack between 1- 2 hours before dinner… It would probably be a good idea to eat dinner not later than 8pm at night.. hope this helps.. please let us know how it goes…:)

Sherrie March 14, 2008 at 11:07 am

I am interested in doing this plan and was wondering if this could be done on a weekly basis to lose more weight.

Dee Wilson March 14, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Hi Sherrie, as with all weight loss diet plans you should always consult your physician first with any questions you may have. The same is true for the 3 day liver cleanse described here.

To answer your question, in my view the 3 day liver cleanse diet – including the one day cranberry orange juice fasting – is safe enough for a healthy person to use repeatedly, although once every month should suffice.

I love your question and want to elaborate on it a little further. The value of this liver detoxifying plan is that it forces us to think about the food we put into our mouth and how certain nutrients are processed by the liver. For example, instead of mindlessly snacking on candy we choose snacks that help us feel energetic throughout the day.

Then, after day three, it should get easier keeping the framework of the plan in place. Just add cruciferous vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli, red and green cabbage to the menu. Add carrots, tomatoes, green beans to the mix – choose whole grain breads over white breads – choose chicken or fish over red meat…

Further more, create your own healthy snacks – use nuts, fruit and plain/or vanilla low fat yogurt, apple, a banana, a slice of whole grain bread and peanut butter. Pick up a protein bar with less than 100 calories.

Rather than eating three times a day big, let’s eat six times a day in smaller portions – breakfast, lunch and dinner and have a healthy snack in between. Hydrate with water or tea every hour. Exercise – walk the dog – choose the stairs – invite your friend to a power walk down the beach or trail – work your mind – read a book or do a puzzle – play trivia. Listen to music.

Sherrie, I hope you see my point. It is not how often you do the liver cleanse diet, great overall life changing results only happen when you re-evaluate your choices for the better every day. And I promise you, you will not only lose weight but can keep off too.

emily March 18, 2008 at 6:19 pm

ive heard of the exact same thing but u just drink the cranberry mixture for the 3 days and then slowly go back into food much like the master cleanse

Sherrie March 19, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Thanks a great deal Dee, I found the additional information to be very helpful. I am going to start today. I will keep you posted.

ashley April 30, 2008 at 1:43 am

just a couple quick questions…is there anything i can substitute for the beets in the salad?? and also can i put vinegar and oil on the salad as dressing and still be following the diet?

toro June 9, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Hi,

Did the article quote any scientific studies?

If so could someone post the info

Thank you and have a great day!

Dee Wilson June 10, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Toro, thank you for asking.

Report on ascorbic acid: Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital (improving the liver’s ability to excrete fat and toxins by as much as 35 percent).

On cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger: UCLA (studies suggest improve liver’s breakdown of fat and environmental pollutants by as much as 25 percent).

“At least 4 million women have already tried the plan, and they’ve proven that it safely and completely revitalizes this fat burning organ (liver), prompting dramatic weight loss,” says nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D..

Rachael June 30, 2008 at 2:54 pm

I was going to start the diet, but I bought flax seed oil. Can I replace that instead of the ground flax seed? If so, how many should I take?

Dee Wilson July 1, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Flax seed, unlike the flax seed oil, has not been stripped of dietary fiber (20%)and lignan phytoestrogens…

It probably would be best to choose the seeds over the oil because of the added fiber (and the recipe). Both forms are super healthy and it is ultimately up to you (taste preference)to decide. Just don’t mix the oil into the juice. Take separately.

Note: Both Flax seeds and Flax seed oil contain essential fatty acids to help increase energy, increase metabolism, and up the rate at which oxygen is used throughout your body.

Hope this helps, Rachael – best wishes and much success – Dee

I tried this, so far I’m on day two of the cleanse. i’ve done far better cleanses then this, like the Master Cleanse for example.
I personally don’t like this.
It’s day two and i haven’t lost any weight whatsoever. In fact I feel like I’ve gained weight.
I’ve eaten more today then I do when I’m not on cleanses.
I don’t see how it could possibly work when we’re eating this much in a day.

Valerie August 26, 2008 at 11:01 pm

I did this detox and I plan on doing it again to jumpstart my next weight loss regime. In the week following the three day process, I lost 6 lbs. To date I have lost 20 lbs becuase of healthier eating and a more active lifestyle. I believe the detox helped in that endeavor.

Alyce January 31, 2009 at 8:25 am

Hi I’m only interested in this detox from a health point of view but don’t need to loose weight – is this a recommended detox for problems with the liver or should I look for a more intense detox?

Juliana May 11, 2009 at 3:18 am

I’m a vegetarian. Do you have any suggestions for what I should eat instead of the lean protein?

Kirst @ Tunturi Rowing Machine February 10, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I have done a liver cleanse for health reasons and not just to lose weight.
THe first day was really tough but after the third day I felt great – really vitalised. You have to be diciplined though and stick with the exact guidelines of the course. This diet above is fairly close to what I did – only I had a good supplement I took which aided with the cleanse too. Oh and I took of 4 days from work so that I could deal with any side effects. Im glad I did!

Dana C February 22, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Are you supposed to drink the cranwater on day 2 and 3 with the food? Or, are you only supposed to eat the food on days 2 and 3?
Thank you
