I like to picture the Chinese Yin and Yang as a line. To keep in balance we can’t just stay on one end. We have to seek the other as well. Trying to lose weight is one great example of Yin and Yang. The opposite end to exercising (the active Yang) is sleeping (the restful Yin). Needless to say we can’t exercise 24 hours a day, unless we’re training for the Olympics, and not sleep. The same is true on the sleeping end. Or you might as well book a room in a nursing home to be taken care of.
To avoid the fate of either end of the line we’ve got to find balance in life, every day. When overweight, we feel that something is wrong. Outfits don’t fit like they used to. Worse, we feel fatigued and not quite healthy or strong enough to handle what is thrown at us, although others might not even notice.
The obvious approach to losing belly fat is sensible diet and exercise. To get back to the example of Yin and Yang, we put eating on one end of the line and starving on the other. We shouldn’t eat thoughtlessly and gobble up whatever we want. On the other hand we shouldn’t starve ourselves either. Here are two Yin and Yang Lines… feel free to add more to this blog…
Yin and Yang Lines for Losing Weight
Balance exercise/sleep:
- Exercise for 45 minutes a day, five days a week. Or split 45 minutes exercising into three intervals of 15 minutes each. Make getting adequate sleep every night as important as getting enough physical activity.
Balance eating/starving:
- Eat three small meals, and three 130 calorie snacks in between

Balance resistance training with cardio:
Yang: Three days a week go hard for the 45 mins in the gym. I mean all out intensity. Push to the point of failure and then some.
Yin: The other two days (using your formula, which I agree with), go for a 45 minute run, swim, aerobics class, etc.
It’s the perfect balance for me – building muscle while losing fat.
Just have to make sure the other two legs of the tripod (nutrition and rest) are just as strong and the results are awesome.
Great analogy. Keep up the great flow of ideas Dee.
