Here’s the recipe for the green detox smoothie featured on ABC News this morning. It’s supposed to be especially good for cleansing the liver, while the cilantro in particular is thought to help draw heavy metals out of the body. With all the fresh raw fruit and vegetables, this detox smoothie is loaded with vitamins, phytonutrients (such as chlorophyll) and fiber. It’s also very easy to make since all you’ll need is a blender. Drink one large glass every morning as an everyday cleanse for the body, or as part of a healthy juicing diet.

Can the green detox smoothie be refrigerated for a period of time? How many days?
Hi Tracey,
Yes, it is safe to refrigerate the remaining portion of the smoothie until
the next day. However, longer refrigeration will deplete the smoothie of
its nutrients.
I started the green smoothie detox on Friday, it’s been already 4 days and I am not sure how my body should be reacting? For example, I haven’t really used the bathroom as I thought I would be using it. I thought my body would be flushing out everything and I actually feel constipated.Am I doing something wrong?
You’re not doing anything wrong Michele, but here’s some information and a few pointers which I hope will help:
This is supposed to be a very gentle detox, so if you already detox regularly or include many whole grains, and raw fruits and vegetables in your diet, you may not notice any side effects (which is good
First, it makes a difference if you’re using a blender or a juicer. A juicer extracts the juice, but also separates the fiber out, which will limit the effectiveness of the detox. It’s best to use a blender, because this will just chop the ingredients into ultra fine pieces, enhancing absorption without stripping away any nutrients.
If you’re feeling constipated, consider whether you’re getting enough fluids throughout your day. When adding extra fiber to your daily diet (via the green smoothie) you also have to make sure you’re staying adequately hydrated. This is because fiber needs to soak up enough water to effectively move through the digestive tract. Also consider your activity level. If you don’t exercise regularly, start taking a short brisk walk once a day, while upping your fluid intake. Exercise is a big factor that’s often overlooked when considering constipation.
Lastly, while this detox recipe is a good one, when it comes to daily detox, variety is key, so don’t hesitate to experiment with different fruits and types of lettuce. Two excellent add-ins to consider are fresh wheat grass (nutrient dense, high fiber – you can grow your own or purchase at a health food store) and aloe vera.
Aloe vera is a natural detox food that can help lower cholesterol, ease inflammation, protect your body from damaging oxalates in tea and coffee, and is high in electrolytes and glyconutrients (just to name a few). It is also a natural, gentle cleanser for the bowels. Simply squeeze the juice from one leaf into your smoothie. You can also purchase a high quality aloe vera juice from your local health food store and add about 3 large Tablespoons (more or less to suit taste).
Tanya,
The information was is great. I do include fruits and vegetables in my daily “diet”, so I am doing something right. I have been using a blender for my juicing. After reading your blog, I realized haven’t been drinking enough water and my level of activity had been close to nothing these last few days. I will add these extra things back to my daily diet and let you know if anything changes!
Thanks again.
I have been drinking this excellent smoothie since I first saw it on July 11, 2009. My question is: Does it promote an over-active bladder? Seems like all I’ve been doing is eliminating. It’s good to be releasing toxins but I’m always “distracted”.
does anyone know if the green cleanse helps to eliminate bloating? i am considering this detox, but need to understand more of the over all benefits before comitting.
Peggy, I am not aware that the Green Smoothie Detox causes an overactive bladder, but if you adopted the healthy habit of doing this daily detox, you might be getting more fluids than your body is normally used to. The vegetables in this juice have very high water content.
In reference to Bell’s question “does it eliminate bloating?” it really depends on what your body is used to. This detox recipe is not only high in nutrients, but also rich in fiber. The large amount of fiber may actually cause some bloating if you normally don’t consume much. However, this should pass. In fact, ones your body adjust, adding foods like this to your diet can prevent bloating long term. If you still have problems, consider adding yogurt to your daily diet.
I’ve heard a lot about detoxing but not tried it out. I might give this recipe a shot. Thanks.
