FDA is Reviewing the Safety of the Popular Fat-Blocker Orlistat (aka Xenical and Alli).

Alli, Xenical, and Orlistat- Fat-blockers under review for potential liver damage.

Orlistat, also marketed as Alli and Xenical, is under review by the FDA for reports of liver damage. However, these fat-blockers have not been recalled, as no definite link to liver damage has been officially established. Therefore, the FDA is stating that consumers who are using these weight loss products should continue taking them.

Here are the details of the reports received by the FDA:

Between 1999 and 2008, the FDA received 32 reports of serious liver injury in patients taking orlistat. Of those cases, 27 reported hospitalization and six resulted in liver failure. Thirty of the adverse events occurred outside the United States. The most commonly reported adverse events included yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), weakness, and stomach pain.

Signs of potential liver damage include:

  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice/ Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes.
  • Fever
  • Brown Urine
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Light Colored Stools
  • Itching

Please consult your physician if you are taking orlistat, xenical, or alli and have experienced any of the above-mentioned symptoms.

It has been reported that patients consuming weight loss pills observer some side effect like: yellowing of skin or in the white portion of the eyes, abdominal pain, stomach pain, nauseous feeling etc. There are some doubts over xenical and alli- weight reducing drugs. It might cause liver damage. FDA has stated that to seek medical advice for those who consume such pills.
