Cottage cheese is still my all time favorite snackfood for healthy dieting. The small-curd cottage cheese, grade A with 4% milk fat. Note: I did not opt for the NO FAT or even LOW FAT version. Although these are very tasty, there is no comparison to the smooth creamy taste of the little fattier kind. This small amount of extra fat does wonders for satisfying hunger and help curb cravings. Half a cup of cottage cheese adds up to only 120 calories. I even add one teaspoon of omega-rich flaxseed oil for another 40 calories and then top it off with my favorite berries and lots of them, especially fresh strawberries (full of vitamins and fiber). Ta-dah! I then have a well-balanced mini-meal.

Not counting the strawberries, this snack adds up to 160 calories. Yes and my body will have to work it off again… Yet the fat in the cottage cheese helps metabolize vitamin D and other nutrients you hopefully add to your every day diet. Vitamin D can be added with supplements or with 15 to 20 minute direct sun exposure (leave skin clean – no sunscreen!.

The berries add fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to your snack or mini meal. Also, they calm cravings for sweets. If I am in the mood for salty – I don’t do anything more than add a little flax seed oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper to the cottage cheese. The protein and small amount of fat keeps your body satisfied and you won’t be hungry for the next 2 hours to come.

This still relatively low cal snack is kind of like getting it all. Enjoy.
