In the second part of our post “How To Cut 3500 Calories from your diet” we uncover the calories in coffee.

You may not want to read this, but try to avoid getting any coffee drinks on the go. Even if you think that what you’re choosing should be low-fat, low-sugar, or even plain, because it often isn’t. Check out these examples from Starbucks:

  • Starbucks Iced Coffee® 16 oz. (with no added sugar or milk): 90 calories- its already pre-sweetened
  • Starbucks Cappuccino® 16 oz.: 140 calories
  • Caffé Vanilla Frappuccino® Light Blended Coffee 16 oz.: 190 calories
  • Starbucks Caffè Latte® 16 oz.: 220 calories

(: A latte has a latte more calories than I thought…

If you have to stop for a really good cup of coffee on your way to work, just switching a latte for a cappuccino would save 80 calories. In five days, that adds up to 400 calories.

*Here’s the link to the Starbucks webpage. You can calculate the total calories in every Starbucks drink, and include how much cream, milk, or sugar you normally use, so it’s a much more accurate calculation. (over 8700 possible combinations)

Better yet, make your own coffee combination:

  • Half and Half 1 Tbsp: 20 calories
  • Whole Milk 1 Tbsp: 9 calories
  • Fat-free (skim) milk, 1 Tbsp: 5 calories
  • Plain Nondairy Creamer, powder, 1 Tbsp: 30 calories
  • Low-Fat Plain Nondairy Creamer, powder, 1 Tbsp: 25 calories
  • 1 tsp. sugar 15 calories
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar 45 calories
  • Sugar Free coffee syrups: 0 calories
  • 1 Cup Coffee, plain: Less than 5 calories

Flavor-infused coffee beans usually don’t have any extra calories, but check labels to be sure.

*Please note that the calorie list above is to be used as a guide only. Calorie counts can vary slightly depending on manufacturer and region.

Here’s how to make a easy, tasty, and low-calorie frappucino of your own:

Low-Calorie Creamy Iced Coffee (65 calories)

  • 1 cup of strong coffee, chilled
  • 3-4 ice cubes
  • 3 Tbs. Half and Half
  • 1-2 tsp. calorie-free coffee syrup (any flavor) or calorie free sweetener

Place all ingredients into a closed container and shake well. The half and half is higher in saturated fat, but 3 Tbsp. will not kill your diet, and in fact will help with vitamin D absorption which is important for healthy weight loss. Instead, it will add a much richer flavor to your iced coffee, 3 g. of protein, and only 60 calories.

By making your coffee at home, and being aware of exactly what goes in it, you could save a lot of calories. Just by switching from sugar to calorie free coffee syrup, if you drink 14 cups of coffee per week (with 2 tsp. of sugar), you’ll save 420 calories.

If you like Cappuccino: here is a great high fiber, low fat Cappuccino recipe :)
