A Weight Loss Pill That Actually Works?

Rhesus Monkey – eating an orange

The idea of a weight loss pill that actually works seems magical, especially for people battling with obesity. Thinking perhaps, it would eliminate their need for short term starvation diets as well as long term healthy diets and the extra push it takes to exercise. Yet the question remains, can we substitute the conventional methods of diet and exercise with a weight loss pill that actually works, doing nothing?

The University of Texas has been doing some research on a special weight loss pill to help obese Rhesus monkeys lower their body fat. Note, they are using monkeys, as they better resemble the human body for comparison than mice.

Compared to Weight loss pills on the market today that suppress appetite and increase the body’s metabolism, the weight loss pill in testing targets fat cells by cutting the blood flow to them. This impairs their ability to store unused energy from food sources as fat, resulting, for obese monkeys, in weight loss.

These monkeys lost a little over ten percent of their body weight in just four weeks. If applied to a 200 pound person, this amounts to about 22 pounds fat loss in a month.

I have to admit, I like the idea of popping a pill to lose weight fast as opposed to spending time in the gym and lowering my caloric intake down to a measly 1200 calories every day.

Although proven to work successfully in obese Rhesus monkeys, I don’t think this pill can ever replace a healthy eating and exercise regimen for long lasting results. For example, without exercising, fat tissue can’t be replaced with muscle tissue, thus help us sculpture the body or gain strength. Without the right nutrients, our body won’t be able to retain healthy muscle tissue, bones and vital organs.

But I deduct from the study that this pill, if deemed safe for human consumption, can one day help obese people initially lose a great amount of fat weight – fast. Encouraging results for the obese person struggling with diets. Further more, losing a considerable amount of body fat makes it a lot easier to adhere to healthy nutrition and a fitness plan, leading to good habits, likely to last through life.

Yet, I don’t think this drug is intended for the occasional dieter, seeking to lose those extra 10 pounds. As the study shows, the lean monkeys don’t lose any weight at all by taking the pill.
